Abolish the Rent Tax!

Arizona and Alaska are the only two states which assess a special "sales" tax on renters.  This tax ranges from 1.8% to 3% of the amount of the rent.  The American Tenants Association believes that this tax is regressive, unfairly singles out renters for punishment, is not deductable for Federal income tax purposes unlike property taxes, and in many instances falls on the poor and senior citizens living on fixed incomes.  We are adding this issue to our Legislative Agenda and will be contacting the Governors of Arizona and Alaska in an attempt to stop this tax.

All of us at the American Tenants Association wish renters and friends of renters everywhere a Happy New Year.

Our resolutions for 2011 include:

* Expand the number of radio stations carrying our Renter Nation Radio Show.

* Institute our nationwide Help Desk to handle tenant complaints about their landlords.

* Launch our ATENAnet social media network.

* Expand our Affiliate Program to include more of the 30,000 local tenant organizations under the
   ATENA umbrella.

* Support national and local legislation expanding on the rights of tenants including the safety of their
   security deposits.

We appreciate your support throughout 2010 and look forward to your continued support in 2011!

Radio Show in the Works

John Romanin and I met today with KFNX radio in Phoenix.  The radio station thinks a renters radio show would be a great idea.  We agree.  As a result, it looks like "RenterNation", the Official Radio Voice of the American Tenants Association, is tentatively scheduled to debut on Saturday, November 20 at 11AM to noon Arizona time.

We intend to discuss matters of importance to residential tenants as well as take your phone calls about your concerns.  We will keep you posted when things are finalized.
